Cooking for mom

Posted in Amma, Feelings, Food, Happiness, Home, Life, Mom, Musings, Personal, Taste, relationships by Laksh on January 19, 2008

A typical weekend for me involves among other things getting up late, cooking up a storm and sleeping in the afternoons. This is how it has been for many years now. Some weekends the course is altered but that does not happen too often.

Then there are weekends when we have guests visiting. This weekend I have amma visiting me. Of all the things amma is synonymous with, food tops the list. Like everyone else I will swear by her cooking. Nobody makes mor kuzhambu or even the humble rava upma like she does. So, cooking for amma is a big deal. A very big deal.

It is not that she critiques my cooking or anything. If anything she observes silently and offers no comment at all. With her around there is no pressure but just that supreme desire to win her praise. So as I saute onions for my sambar or puree tomato for my milagu rasam my mind whirls with thoughts of what I could do to make it special. Extra special.

So, today when I was done cooking and amma opened the lid and gave an appreciative sniff I knew my day was made. :)

I’m not sure what half of those dishes are, but they do sound good. Around our home, it is my husband that does all the cooking. His mom couldn’t cook so he learned how to. But I just might give it another try. I’m beginning to think about lunch. :)

@womanstuff: Just linked back to my recipe blog for the dishes mentioned. Mostly some kind of Indian soup served over rice. I was not much into cooking earlier but now it seems like my passion for it has been re-ignited.

I’m so impressed by your cooking skills :) . Aside from microwaving, making spaghetti, and boiling eggs, I’m completely hopeless. I suppose I’ve just never had the proper training and I’m so scared I’ll mess up a recipe!

@GoGo: I totally get that “scared I will mess up a recipe” feeling. Primarily because of that I make up my own recipes so there is really nothing to butcher!
